5.0 out of 5 stars Works way better than expected., March 13, 2009

Former Reynolds Handi-Vac user here. I like the Handi-Vac, but the bags are no longer for sale at any stores around here. Saw the Ziploc Vacuum Pump at a local store for a few bucks and decided to give it a shot. This review will focus on comparing the two since they are a similar product.

Key points:

* Ziplock pump does not use batteries; it is a manual pump. Reynolds Handi-vac is a battery hog.
* Ziploc pump is extremely easy to use. Doesn't require you to find a "sweet spot" like the Reynolds one. Takes maybe 3-4 pumps to get all the air out of a bag. With the Reynolds pump you sometimes have to sit and fiddle with the position of the bag/pump to get it just right before it will start vacuuming the air out (all while wasting battery life). This is a non-issue with the Ziploc vacuum.
* The Ziploc bags are much higher quality than the Reynolds bags. They just seem thicker/more durable.
* Cost of replacement bags isn't bad. $2.75 for them on sale... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars not as good a seal as a melting vac sealer, but handy and good for cuts of meat in particuluar, November 1, 2008
This review is from: S C Johnson Wax Ziploc Vacuum Pump/Bags Food Storage Bags & Wrap
A couple of reviewers noted that although the vacuum forms well, the bag doesn't hold the vacuum well. That's true, but that doesn't obviate the usefulness of this device. Using this you can get MUCH more air out than by the old method of "pressing"the air out, yet you don't have to pay $50-$100 for a more expensive system.

Users should note the simple valve design: it's just a hole in the bag, covered by a stiffer piece of plastic that has a semicircular cut in it. So under vacuum, the stiffer plastic seals against the bag.

So, logically, if you want the vacuum to hold better, I suggest taking a 2" square of clear packing tape and taping over the valve, making sure there are no seams. That should do the trick.

Also, note that it's a ziploc-style bag--I doubt that the ziploc seal itself is capable of withstanding a vacuum perfectly for that long. If you have a $15 handheld bag heat sealer, you could heat seal parallel to the ziploc for a much longer... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars I'm really disappointed, November 11, 2008
This review is from: S C Johnson Wax Ziploc Vacuum Pump/Bags Food Storage Bags & Wrap
I bought this product at a local store specifically so that I could store dog food. It's much more economical to buy a big bag of food than several smaller ones, but the food in the big bag goes stale before my small dog can eat it all, so I was excited to try the vacuum bags. I bought the starter set and a box of gallon bags, figuring I could buy refills online.

First of all, the instructions should explain that you need to leave about an inch or so of space at the top of the bag so that both layers of the area where the vacuum seal is can lie flat on the countertop. If this area is not perfectly flat, the pump won't work.

The pump itself works great--I confess I got a little thrill to see it actually removing the air, and to pick up a bag of dog food that was now seemingly solid as a rock. I quickly filled, sealed, and vacuumed the second bag, with similar results.

When I picked up the first bag to stack them and put them in my pantry, however,... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars The usual good stuff here!, December 1, 2010

I love organization especially for my food and my fruits and vegetables. Ziploc is much much better than plastic bags in which you buy fruit and vegetables and also easily reusable. I used to just throw them away but now I reuse them and with lower quality brands, you may not be able to do it as easily but with Ziploc, it even washes well in washing machine. Delivery was quick - no trip to Target, thank you Amazon!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good to have around for the price..., February 14, 2011

Customer Video Review Length:: 1:38 Mins

I have the Reynolds vac sealer that I bought over a year ago as well. That works just as well, however they no longer sell it in my area, to my knowledge anyawy,so when I saw this pump I was curious. First of all, you can't beat the price. The refill bags are reasonably priced as well. I purchased them at a Walmart in my area. The pump and the battery powered Reynolds sealer are comparable to each other in function. I have used the pump many times and have had one instance where there seemed to be some air leakage; to remedy the problem, I re-pumped and placed 2 strips of tape over the pump entry point- so far so good. The way I see it, even if it doesn't work 100% all the time, it still gets more air out than using an ordinary zip seal bag alone, and at such a cheap price, I feel it more than pays for itself.

In the video, I demo both the Reynolds and the Ziploc so you can see how they match up to eachother. Also, you'll notice that the Ziploc... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars You Get What You Pay For!! (The Bags Can't Keep A Seal), September 18, 2009
By
Rob Ling "Rob Ling" (Aloha, OR USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This product is a great idea, and a great price break in contrast to the overly expensive alternatives out there, however, the old addage holds true - you get what you pay for. As a home brewer, my plan was to use these to protect the hops I harvested while they are in the freezer waiting to be used for brewing. It was a cheap enough solution that if it didn't work, I wouldn't feel too bad.

They appeared to work great at first. Then after a few hours in the freezer, I noticed the bags had leaked through the little inflater hole. I tried putting some vinyl packing tape over the hole after sucking all of the air out, but the bags still managed to fill back up with air.

If you are looking for a cheap way to store hops - or anything else which requires a good seal - this isn't your solution.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick and Easy, December 12, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
I found this product easy and quick to use. I don't use it for long
storage(weeks) rather just days, so I can't say how it works in that time frame.
It works very well so far. I use it for lettuce. But the best thing i use it
for is apples. I usually don't eat a whole apple at a time so the rest turns
brown. Instead of having to use lemon juice, I stick the remainder of the apple
in a vacuum bag, pump a few times and it ready for future consumption without
tuning brown. :). Here is something I plan to do. Make several individual portions
of salad at one time, Vacuum seal each portion and use during the week.

Hint: really press down on zip lock to insure a good seal before pumping.

Cons: Shipping cost. I wish this was prime Item for shipping as you can usually
find this item locally without incurring the shipping cost. This is why 4 stars.
